A kanazoshi (stories written in kana) from the early Edo period. It can also be read as "Okashiki" (this furigana is written in the text). Written by Joraishi, it was published in 1642 (Kan'ei 19). It is an essay book modelled on "Tsurezuregusa" (Essays in Idleness), and consists of 280 sections. Its contents are mainly moral lessons on morality and patriotism, and range from historical anecdotes from ancient times to the present, discussions of Buddhism, Confucianism and Buddhism, tales of observations and hearings, and short stories, but it is mainly opinions on samurai life based on the author's own experiences, and is characterised by harsh criticism of the elder retainers who controlled the domain government, and descriptions of the misery of the life of a ronin (masterless samurai).
