Toki (Japanese crested ibis) - Toki

Japanese:
Toki (Japanese crested ibis) - Toki
A bird of the Ibis family. Wingspan: 40cm. Its feathers are white, with some of its flight feathers tinged with pale pink. It was once widespread in East Asia, but is believed to be extinct in Russia and the Korean peninsula, and only a few remain in parts of China. It was once widespread in Japan, but the few remaining on Sado Island and the Noto Peninsula are also on the brink of extinction, and two birds captured on Sado Island were taken into care at the Toki Conservation Center on the island. After that, attempts were made to breed with Chinese Toki in China and Japan, but they were unsuccessful. One of the two died in 1995, and it is now believed that the Japanese Toki will become extinct due to their aging. It feeds on snails, loaches, etc. in rice paddies and wetlands. It is an internationally protected bird and a special natural monument. It is extinct in the wild (Ministry of the Environment's 4th Red List).
