In the late Edo period, the German doctor Siebold was deported from Japan. In September 1828 (Bunsei 11), when Siebold, a medical officer at the Dutch trading post, was returning home after completing his term of office, his ship was wrecked in a storm and his cargo was searched. The incident occurred when it was discovered that the luggage he was bringing back to the Netherlands contained many prohibited items, including a map of Japan created by Ino Tadataka. The investigation was protracted, taking place in Edo and Nagasaki, and Siebold was detained in Dejima for about a year. On September 25, 1829 (October 22, solar calendar), he was sentenced to "Nihon Okamae" (exile), and was deported from Japan in December of the same year. The Japanese who were implicated in this incident in Edo included Takahashi Sakuzaemon Kageyasu, the Magistrate of Books and Astronomy (imprisoned, died of illness during interrogation), inner circle physician Habu Genseki (whose stipend and house were confiscated), and Nagasakiya Gen'emon. In Nagasaki, the number of people implicated ranged from his disciples Ninomiya Keisaku, Koryosai, and Dejima painter Kawahara Toyosuke (Kawahara Keiga), to the interpreters Baba Tamehachiro, Yoshio Chujiro, Inabe Ichigoro, Hori Gizaemon, Suenaga Jinzaemon, Iwase Yaemon, and Yashiro Iwase, totaling over 50 people, ranging from servants.
