Seihei Sando storybook - Seihei Sando storybook

A collection of short stories in colloquial Chinese from the Ming Dynasty. Compiled by Hong Bian. Published around 1541-51. The editor was a known book collector who compiled the storybooks he had collected from the Song and Yuan dynasties into six collections of 10 stories each: "Rain Window," "Long Lantern," "Zuihang," "Qianzhuang," "Xieqian," and "Awakening Dream." He published the books with Hong's study name "Qingping Shandang" written on the fold of the paper. The compilation of 15 stories that remained in the Cabinet Library (now the National Archives of Japan) is called "Qingping Shandang Huaben." The subjects are diverse, including ghost stories, love stories, court cases, and historical tales, but the editor made almost no revisions or additions to the books when they were published, and they retain the old style of storytelling texts that were popular in urban entertainment districts, convey the simple narrative style of storytellers, and many of them reflect the public mood of the Song and Yuan dynasties well. Fourteen other stories have been discovered in China, and of these, twelve stories belonging to the "Usoshu" and "Kanzenshu" have been reprinted collectively under the name "Usoshu Kanzenshu," but the title "Seipingsandang wahon" is sometimes used to include all of them.
