1844‐1929 A military officer and colonial official in the former French Indochina. He was the first scholar to study Cambodia and the Champa Kingdom. Born in Savoy in the south of France, he graduated from the military academy in 1868 and was immediately assigned to Indochina as an administrative officer. He became interested in the Cambodian language, customs, and history, and in 1874 became a Cambodian language instructor at the civil servant training school in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City). He also served as acting commissioner in Cambodia (1879-81), while conducting research activities (1882-85) throughout Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and southern Vietnam (where the Cham people live), and since assuming his post he has collected palm leaf manuscripts and rubbings of inscriptions in various places.
