…Although double-flowered cherry trees, which had been cultivated since the Nara period, were known, it was only in the Edo period that cherry tree varieties were recorded in a comprehensive manner, with 40 varieties listed in Mizuno Motokatsu's Kadan Komoku (1681). Since then, many illustrated books of cherry trees have been published, including Matsuoka Gentatsu's Igansai Ohin (1758) which lists 69 varieties, and five volumes (1803-04) of Kafu, Zoku Kafu Vol. 1 and 2, Mata Zoku Kafu, and Kafu Supplementary, drawn by Sakurai Sessen and compiled by Ichihashi Chosho, which contain 252 illustrations.
