Ecuadorian novelist. After dropping out of university, he changed jobs several times but aspired to be a writer. After publishing several plays, he gained worldwide fame as an indigenism writer with his collection of short stories, Mud of the Mountains (1933), and his novel, Huacipungo (1934), which depicts the tragedies of three different characters: the individualless Indians who move in groups, the mixed-race people who directly supervise them, and the white people who control the mixed-race people but are themselves controlled by foreign capital. He continued to write many works, including a series of novels, In the Streets (1935, America Prize winner), Chorros (1938), and Wailapamushkas (1948), which are based on his childhood experiences spent on his uncle's plantation and sharply address the ethnic and political issues facing Ecuador.
