One of the gold coins used during the Azuchi-Momoyama and Edo periods. Initially, the shape was not fixed, and it was rectangular or oval, and there was no seal. In 1588, Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered Goto Tokujo to cast the Tensho oban, an oval shape about 15 cm long and 10 cm wide, with an ink inscription "10 ryo, Goto (kao)" in the center. This format was followed thereafter, and the Tokugawa clan also issued five types from the oban za, starting with the Keicho oban (→ Keicho gold and silver) in 1601, followed by the Genroku, Kyoho, Tenpo, and Man'en coins. Oban coins were rarely circulated in general, and were used for prizes and gifts. The 10 ryo of the oban represented the weight of gold dust, and did not necessarily correspond to 10 koban coins. The Keicho oban was about 8 ryo 2 bu of the koban, and the Kyoho oban was about 7 ryo 2 bu of the koban.
