Born: 26 August 1833, Salisbury, Wiltshire [Died] November 6, 1884. British economist and politician. He became a professor at Cambridge University in 1863, a member of the House of Commons for the Liberal Party in 1865, and Minister of Communications in the Gladstone Cabinet in 1880. He established the parcel post system (1882). His main work, "A Manual of Political Economy" (63), was a popular commentary on J.S. Mill's "Principles of Economics," and gained a considerable readership until the new economics of the marginal revolution became widespread. His wife, M. Fawcett, who helped him with the writing of this book, also wrote an introductory book on economics, "Political Economy for Beginners" (70). His other works include "The Economic Position of British Labourer" (65) and "Pauperism, Its Causes and Remedies" (71). Faucet |
