A region in the midwest of the Korean Peninsula. One of the eight provinces of Korea. After independence, it became part of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and is administratively divided by the Jaeryeong River into North Hwanghae Province (Sariwon) in the east and South Hwanghae Province (Haeju) in the west. [Nature] The two mountain ranges, Eonjin and Mokuak, running from northeast to southwest, are about 1,000m high in the northern part, but most of them are hilly mountain ranges less than 500m high. To the north of the ranges lies the wide Jaeryeong River Basin Plain, which continues onto the Lelang Pillar Plain, and in the south, the Yeonbaek Plain stretches along Gyeonggi Bay.
