A city in central Kanagawa Prefecture, east of Sagamihara. Established as a city in 1959. The Odakyu Enoshima Line, which opened between the end of the Taisho era and the beginning of the Showa era, runs north to south through the city, the Sagami Railway Main Line crosses it from east to west, and the Tokyu Denentoshi Line, which opened in 1976, connects it to Chuo-Rinkan in the north. After World War II, it rapidly developed as a US military base town bordering Ayase City to the west, near Atsugi Air Base. It developed as an industrial city centered on the automobile industry, and as a residential satellite city of the Keihin area. Area: 27.09 km2 . Population: 228,186 (2010).
