A city in central Kanagawa Prefecture, east of Sagamihara. Established as a city in 1959. The Odakyu Enoshima Line, which opened between the end of the Taisho era and the beginning of the Showa era, runs north to south through the city, the Sagami Railway Main Line crosses it from east to west, and the Tokyu Denentoshi Line, which opened in 1976, connects it to Chuo-Rinkan in the north. After World War II, it rapidly developed as a US military base town bordering Ayase City to the west, near Atsugi Air Base. It developed as an industrial city centered on the automobile industry, and as a residential satellite city of the Keihin area. Area: 27.09 km2 . Population: 228,186 (2010). 神奈川県中部,相模原東部にある市。1959年市制。大正末から昭和初期にかけて開通した小田急江ノ島線が市域を南北に縦貫し,相模鉄道本線が東西に横断,北部の中央林間に1976年に開通した東急田園都市線が通じる。第2次大戦後,西隣の綾瀬市にかけて厚木飛行場をひかえる米軍基地の町として急速に発展。自動車工業を主とする工業都市,京浜の住宅衛星都市として発展。27.09km2。22万8186人(2010)。
