Snail-worm

A type of small spiral-shelled worm belonging to the family Serpulidae, order Polychaeta, class Annelida, or a general term for this species. The Dexiospira foraminosus shell is 2-3 mm in diameter, right-handed, and has three ridges on the back. Some species have left-handed shells, while others have smooth surfaces. It has 15-20 segments. It has four pairs of gill filaments and a operculum on its head. The operculum is cylindrical with a calcareous plate at the front end, which protects it by blocking the shell entrance when an enemy approaches. It also raises its young from eggs to larvae inside the operculum tube. It is found in shallow seas south of the Tohoku region, and grows on seaweed, stones, and shells. There are currently 14 species known in Japan.

環形動物門多毛綱定在目カンザシゴカイ科に属する小さな渦巻状の殻に入ったゴカイの一種、またはこの類の総称。ウズマキゴカイDexiospira foraminosusは、殻の直径2～3ミリメートルで右巻き、背面に3本の隆起線が走っている。種類によっては殻が左巻きのものや表面が平滑なものなどがある。環節数は15～20個。頭部に4対の鰓糸(さいし)と1個の殻蓋(かくぶた)がある。殻蓋は円筒形で前端に石灰質の板があり、外敵がくると殻の入口をふさいで身を守る。また殻蓋の筒の中で卵から幼虫になるまで子を育てる。東北地方以南の浅海に分布しており、海藻、石、貝殻などの上に着生する。現在日本に14種が知られている。
