It was called La Plata, Chuquisaca, and Charcas, but in 1839 it was given its current name after its first president. It is the constitutional capital of the Republic of Bolivia and is home to the Supreme Court, but other political and administrative institutions were moved to La Paz after 1900. The Bolivian Independence Declaration was made here in 1825.
