A Latin American Indian tribe living in the upper Amazon basin. Their language is a Tupi language. In the 17th century, it became a base for Christian missionary work, and Omagua was used widely as an official language among neighboring tribes. Later, they were driven into the jungle by slave hunters by the Portuguese, and today there are very few remaining. In addition to cultivating manioc (cassava), they catch turtles and fish for food. In the past, they were a developed society divided into classes such as chiefs, priests, and slaves, and several villages were further integrated under a powerful chief. They have a unique settlement structure with houses lined up in a row on the high riverbank, and because the villages are close to each other, it is said that the houses look like they are built continuously for several kilometers.
