Revenge at Igagoe

Japanese: 伊賀越の敵討 - いがごえのかたきうち

One of the famous vendettas in the Edo period. Watanabe Kazuma was a retainer of Ikeda Tadao, the lord of Okayama, Bizen, and in July 1630 (Kan'ei 7), his younger brother Gendayu was killed by Kawai Matagoro, a retainer of the same domain. Kazuma asked Matagoro's father Hanzaemon to hand him over, but he refused, and Matagoro escaped to Edo, where he was hidden by the hatamoto Ando Jiuemon and Kuze Sanshiro. The Ikeda family captured Hanzaemon and tried to exchange him for Matagoro, but the hatamoto accepted Hanzaemon and did not hand him over. The Ikeda family appealed to the shogunate for a settlement, but Tadao died leaving a will on what to do with Matagoro, and in 1632 the Okayama Ikeda family was transferred to Tottori.

江戸時代の著名な敵討の一つ。備前岡山藩主池田忠雄の家臣に渡辺数馬という者があり，1630年(寛永7)7月その弟源太夫が同藩士河合又五郎に殺された。数馬は又五郎の父半左衛門に引渡しを求めたが応ぜず，又五郎を江戸に逃がし，旗本安藤治右衛門，久世三四郎らがこれをかくまった。池田家では半左衛門を捕らえ，又五郎と交換しようとしたが，旗本側は半左衛門は受け取って又五郎を引き渡さなかった。池田家は幕府に訴えて裁断を求めたが，やがて忠雄は又五郎の処置を遺言して死に，32年岡山池田家は鳥取に国替になった。
