Cheongju

Japanese: 清州 - せいしゅう

The capital of North Chungcheong Province, South Korea. It is the center of the grain-producing region of the Miho Plain in the Miho River basin, a tributary of the Geum River, and has been a military and administrative base since ancient times. The oldest book printed with metal type, Jikji (held at the National Library of France), was published in 1377 at Heungdeoksa Temple in Cheongju. Along with the Seongjeongwon Diary, it was registered as a World Memory in 2001. It distributes rice, soybeans, vegetables, tobacco, etc., and has the Cheongju Industrial Complex with many small and medium-sized factories such as silk and pottery factories. It is home to Chungbuk National University and Cheongju University. Population: 666,924 (2010).
