A hanging Buddhist painting used in the Lamaist cultural sphere, centered in Tibet. It is also called thaṅ-sku. It was hung in a hall and worshipped, but monks also carried it around villages to use as the principal image in religious ceremonies and to give lectures on the contents of the painting. It probably originated from Indian paṭa (silk painting), and began to be painted in Tibet around the 10th century. Many of the extant works date from the 17th century or later, and painting continues to this day. The style was influenced by the Bengal region of East India, Nepal, and Kashmir styles in ancient times, and later saw the influx of Central Asian and Chinese styles.
