The capital of the voyage of the same name in northeastern Poland. Population 277,100 (1995). Located on the Narew River system, a tributary of the Vistula River, it is the largest city in the northeast. The northeastern part east of the Vistula River is an underdeveloped agricultural region producing rye, potatoes, and flax. There are food and textile industries (wool, hemp textiles, cotton spinning) based on local resources. Vast expanses of virgin forest stretching to the border with the Republic of Belarus are inhabited by wild bison, which are said to be extinct.
