The picture book of the Battle of Yuki

Japanese: 結城合戦絵詞 - ゆうきかっせんえことば

This war chronicle picture scroll is based on the Battle of Yuki that took place in 1440 (Eikyō 12). It consists of one section of text and two sections of pictures. The author is unknown. Based on the painting technique and depiction of the people, it is estimated to have been created around the end of the 15th century. The text describes how King Haruo and King Yasuo fled to Nikkōyama, where they were hidden by Yuki Ujitomo and took refuge in Yuki Castle. After the castle fell, the brothers tried to escape disguised as women but were captured by the shogunate forces, and Ujitomo and the others were killed in battle. The pictures, on the other hand, are made up of a section showing the two surviving sons, dressed as women, about to be captured, and a section depicting the fighting between the pursuing forces and the besieged forces, with the military commander about to commit seppuku on the edge of a building.

1440年(永享12)におこった結城合戦を題材とした軍記絵巻。詞1段，絵2段によって構成されている。筆者は不詳。絵画の技法，人物の描写からして15世紀末期ごろの成立と推定されている。詞書は〈春王〉〈安王〉が日光山に逃れ，さらに結城氏朝にかくまわれ，結城城に籠城したこと，さらに落城により，兄弟は女装して逃れようとしたが幕府軍に捕らえられたこと，さらに氏朝以下は討死したことを述べている。いっぽう絵は女装した遺子2人が捕らわれようとしている段と，建物の縁で切腹しようとしている武将を中心に，追討軍と籠城軍とが戦っているようすを描写した部分とから成っている。
