German sociologist and social philosopher. From the standpoint of ethos science, he attempted to establish sociology as a real science, criticized formal sociology as logos science, and showed a strong inclination towards practical science. His basic position was to view social images as "forms from life" and historical living reality. His main work, Sociology as a Real Science (1930), expressed this argument, and was highly praised at the time as a controversial work. However, since he sought the direction of modern change in National Socialism and entrusted his political will to a right-wing revolution, his connection with Nazism became problematic, and there are still various discussions about this relationship today. It can be said that Revolution from the Right (1931) expressed this position. After World War II, he aimed to construct a theory of industrial society and attempted to criticize modern civilization, but his sociological system was left incomplete and its evaluation is undecided.

ドイツの社会学者、社会哲学者。エートス科学の立場から、現実科学としての社会学の樹立を図り、形式社会学をロゴス科学として批判して実践科学へ強い志向性を示した。基本的立場は、社会形象を「生からの形式」としてとらえ、歴史的な生ける現実とみるところにあった。主著『現実科学としての社会学』（1930）はこうした主張を表したものであり、当時、問題作として高い評価を受けた。ただ現代の変革の方向を国家社会主義に求め、その政治的意思を右翼革命に託したところから、ナチズムとの結び付きが問題とされることになるが、今日でもなおその関係についてはさまざまな論議がある。『右翼からの革命』（1931）はこうした立場を示したものといってよい。第二次世界大戦後はとくに産業社会に対する理論の構築を目ざすとともに現代の文明批評を試みたが、その社会学的体系は未完成のままに終わっており、評価も定まっていない。
