Sundanese

Japanese: スンダ族 - スンダぞく（英語表記）Sundanese

An ethnic group that lives mainly in Western Java. They speak Sundanese, which belongs to the Indonesian branch of the Austronesian language family, and have an estimated population of about 25.85 million. Some also live in Central Java and southern Sumatra. They depend mostly on agriculture for their livelihood, cultivating rice using rain-fed and irrigated fields, as well as corn. They also practice slash-and-burn agriculture. Their villages are generally larger than those of the Javanese, and several families live in scattered clusters. They are of bilateral descent, and the basic kinship group is the nuclear family, with relatives helping each other in daily life. At the top, kinship groups are oriented toward ancestors. Polygamy is rare, and they often live with the parents of the husband or wife. Most are Muslim, and are generally more devout than the Javanese.

主として西部ジャワに居住する一民族。オーストロネシア語族のインドネシア語派に属するスンダ語を用い，人口約 2585万と推定される。中部ジャワやスマトラ南部にも一部居住している。生業は大部分農耕に依存し，雨水田，灌漑田による稲作のほか，とうもろこしなどもつくる。また焼畑農耕も行われている。村はジャワ族の村より一般に大きく，数家族ごとに散在して居住する。出自は双系であり，核家族が基本的親族集団で，親族が日常生活で互助し合う。上層部では祖先志向的な親族集団がみられる。婚姻は一夫多妻婚はまれで，夫または妻の親元で暮すことが多い。大部分はイスラム教徒で，一般にジャワ族よりも熱心な信徒である。
