Shimoji [town] - Shimoji
A former town in Miyako-gun, southwest of Miyako Island, Okinawa Prefecture. The main settlements are Yonaha and Uechi, facing Yonaha Bay. The area is a 10-50m elevated coral reef plateau, with sugarcane fields and a sugar factory in Uechi. Livestock farming and dairy processing are also thriving. Yonaha Maehama is famous for its beautiful sandy beach. In October 2005, it merged with Hirara City, Miyako-gun Gusuku-cho, Irabu-cho, and Ueno-mura to become Miyakojima City. 23.63 km2 . 3,308 people (2003).

沖縄県，宮古島南西部，宮古郡の旧町。中心集落は与那覇(よなは)湾に面する与那覇と上地(うえち)。10〜50mの隆起サンゴ礁台地で，サトウキビ畑が開け，上地には製糖工場がある。畜産，乳加工業も盛ん。与那覇前浜は美しい砂浜で有名。2005年10月，平良市，宮古郡城辺町，伊良部町，上野村と合併し市制，宮古島市となる。23.63km2。3308人（2003）。
