Dry season

Japanese: 乾季 - かんき（英語表記）dry season

A period or season of the year with little rain. The opposite of the rainy season. Usually used to refer to a period of one month or more. It occurs in tropical and temperate climates where temperatures are relatively high throughout the year and where there is a marked seasonal change in precipitation. In the tropics, there are two seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. In monsoon climates, the dry season is in the winter when the seasonal winds blow in from the continent, while in Mediterranean climates (temperate winter rainy climates), the dry season is in the summer when the area is under the control of the subtropical high pressure system. It is a period of low rainfall that occurs regularly every year and is specific to that region, during which certain plants cease growing and resume activity when the rainy season begins. 一年のうち雨の少ない期間または季節。雨季に対する語。普通は 1ヵ月以上の期間に対して用いられる。年間を通じて気温が比較的高く，降水量の季節変化が著しい熱帯，温帯気候の地域で発現する。熱帯地方での季節変化は雨季と乾季の 2季である。モンスーン気候では，大陸から季節風が吹き出す冬が乾季にあたり，地中海性気候（温帯冬雨気候）では，亜熱帯高気圧の支配下に入る夏が乾季になる。毎年規則的に現れるその地方特有の少雨の時期で，ある種の植物はその期間生育を中止し，雨季が始まると再び活動を開始する。不規則に現れる干魃とは異なる。（→温帯季節風気候，熱帯季節風気候）
