Japanese: 北上[市] - きたかみ

A city in central Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. In 1991, it merged with Waga Town and Ezuriko Village. The city center is Kurosawajiri, where the Kitakami River and Waga River meet, and it developed as a post station on the Oshu Kaido road and a port on the Kitakami River. The Tohoku Shinkansen, Tohoku Main Line, and Tohoku Expressway pass through the city, and the Kitakami Line branches off, making it a key transportation hub for the east-west and north-south directions. Since the 1950s, industrial parks have been developed, and the city's manufacturing shipments were 331 billion yen (2003), the highest in the prefecture, with factories producing electrical equipment, general equipment, lumber, pulp, and more. The Kitakami Basin area is a grain-producing region. Apples, Chinese yams, and taro are local specialties. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 437.55 ^km2 . 93,138 people (2010).

岩手県中部の市。1954年市制。1991年和賀町，江釣子村と合体。中心市街は北上川と和賀川の合流点に当たる黒沢尻(くろさわじり)で，奥州街道の宿駅，北上川河港として発達。東北新幹線，東北本線，東北自動車道が通じ，北上線が分岐する東西，南北の交通の要地をなしている。昭和30年代から工業団地の造成が進み，製造品出荷額は3310億円（2003）で県内１位を占め，電気機器，一般機器，木材，パルプなどの工場がある。北上盆地地区は穀倉地帯をなす。リンゴ，長芋，里芋を特産。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。437.55km²。９万3138人（2010）。
