A biennial plant (illustration) of the Ranunculaceae family native to southern Europe. Its Japanese name is Kurotanesou. Its blue, pink or white flowers bloom in May and its soft, finely divided leaves are pleasing to the eye. It grows to a height of about 50cm, has many branches and finely divided leaves, has finely divided leaf-like bracts at the ends of the branches, and produces single or double petaled flowers similar to anemones, but what appear to be petals are actually sepals, and the true petals have degenerated into nectar-gland-like scales. It has many stamens and an ovary made up of five carpels, but the base of the ovary fuses to form a compound ovary, which matures into a balloon-like inflated capsule about 3cm in diameter.
