Date of birth and death unknown. An Indian Sanskrit poet and playwright active in the 11th century. A Kashmiri Brahmin, he was well versed in grammar and rhetoric. Favoured by King Vikramaditya VI (reigned 1076-1127), he left behind the historical epic poem Vikramānkadeva-carita, which glorifies the king's achievements, and the play Karunasundari, which depicts the marriage of King Karnadeva (reigned 1064-94). However, what made him most famous was his love lyric poem Chaurapanchāsika (50 Odes to Secret Love), which sings of the joys of forbidden love.
