Tsai E - Study

A Chinese soldier. His courtesy name was Songpo. He was from Shaoyang County, Hunan Province. He entered the Current Affairs Academy in Changsha and studied under Liang Qichao. He later studied at a military academy in Japan. He returned to China in 1904 and trained new troops in various regions. In 1911, he became the coordinating commander of the 37th Brigade of the Yunnan Army. In October 1911, in response to the outbreak of revolution in Wuchang, he led the new troops in an uprising, suppressed Yunnan, and was appointed commander. In 1913, he was deemed a threat by Yuan Shikai and recalled to Beijing. In 1915, he opposed Yuan's imperialist movements and escaped from Beijing with his former teacher Liang Qichao. He returned to Yunnan, organized the national protection army, and started the Third Revolution. While fighting in southern Sichuan Province, the anti-Yuan movement spread, leading to the failure of Yuan Shikai's imperialist movement. His tuberculosis later worsened, and he traveled to Japan for treatment, but died in Fukuoka. There is a posthumous collection of his writings in the Collected Works of Professor Cai Songpo.

中国の軍人。字(あざな)は松坡(しょうは)。湖南(こなん／フーナン)省邵陽(しょうよう／シャオヤン)県の人。長沙(ちょうさ／チャンシャー)の時務学堂に入り、梁啓超(りょうけいちょう／リヤンチーチャオ)に学ぶ。のち日本の士官学校に留学。1904年帰国し、各地の新軍の訓練にあたる。ついで1911年、雲南(うんなん／ユンナン)陸軍第三七協（旅団）協統となる。1911年10月、武昌(ぶしょう／ウーチャン)での革命勃発(ぼっぱつ)に呼応し新軍を率いて蜂起(ほうき)、雲南を抑え都督に就任。1913年、袁世凱(えんせいがい)に危険視され、北京(ペキン)に召還される。1915年、袁の帝制の動きに反対し、旧師梁啓超と計って北京を脱出。雲南に戻り護国軍を組織し、第三革命を起こした。四川(しせん／スーチョワン)省南部で転戦する間、反袁の動きは広がり、袁世凱の帝制運動を失敗に導いた。その後、結核が悪化、治療のため日本に渡ったが福岡で客死した。『蔡松坡先生遺集』の遺稿集がある。
