In Japan, there are three subspecies: the large-billed crow C. m . japonensis , which breeds in Tanegashima and areas north of Yakushima, the Ryukyu large-billed crow C. m . connectens , which breeds on the islands between Amami Oshima and Miyakojima, and the red-billed crow C. m . osai , which breeds in the Yaeyama Islands.
