Surikov (English spelling) Vasiliy Ivanovich Surikov

Russian painter. Born into a Cossack family in Krasnoyarsk. Studied under Chistyakov at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. He was interested in historical paintings from his student days, and consistently painted historical paintings. Famous works include "The Morning of the Execution of the Guards" (1881), "Menshikov at Beryozhovo" (1883), "Madame Morozov" (1887), "Yermakh's Conquest of Siberia" (1895), and "Suvorov's Crossing of the Alps" (1899). All of his works are based on extremely important historical episodes in Russian history, and they gained national sympathy. He was highly regarded even during the Soviet era, and the Moscow State Art University was named after him, and was called the Surikov Art University. He has a private art museum in his hometown of Krasnoyarsk.

ロシアの画家。クラスノヤルスクのコサックの家庭に生まれる。ペテルブルグの美術アカデミーでチスチャコフに師事した。学生時代から歴史画に興味をもち、一貫して歴史画を描いた。『親衛兵処刑の朝』(1881)、『ベリョーゾボのメンシコフ』(1883)、『モロゾフ大貴族夫人』(1887)、『イェルマークのシベリア征服』(1895)、『スボーロフのアルプス越え』(1899)などが有名。いずれもロシア史にとってきわめて重要な歴史的エピソードを題材としており、国民的な共感を得た。ソビエト時代になっても高く評価され、国立モスクワ美術大学は彼の名を冠し、スリコフ記念美術大学とよばれていた。生地クラスノヤルスクには個人美術館が開かれている。
