Russian painter. Born into a Cossack family in Krasnoyarsk. Studied under Chistyakov at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. He was interested in historical paintings from his student days, and consistently painted historical paintings. Famous works include "The Morning of the Execution of the Guards" (1881), "Menshikov at Beryozhovo" (1883), "Madame Morozov" (1887), "Yermakh's Conquest of Siberia" (1895), and "Suvorov's Crossing of the Alps" (1899). All of his works are based on extremely important historical episodes in Russian history, and they gained national sympathy. He was highly regarded even during the Soviet era, and the Moscow State Art University was named after him, and was called the Surikov Art University.
