Shoka Famine

Japanese:
Shoka Famine
A nationwide famine lasted for several years after 1258 (Shoka 2). Heavy rains and cold weather in June 1258, plus a typhoon on August 10, caused a nationwide poor harvest, with devastation unfolding from the winter through the spring and summer of the following year, 1259 (Shogen 1). Even after the wheat harvest in April 1259, the famine continued and rumours of young nuns eating dead bodies in the capital led to epidemics. For example, in October 1261 (Kōchō 1), Maejimamura in Edo-go, Toyoshima-gun, Musashi Province, had no peasants left and could no longer shoulder the burden of public duties, and taxes and public duties were delayed in many places due to peasants fleeing or dying.
