Mr. Arai - Niiuji

Japanese: 新居氏 - にいうじ

A powerful clan in Iyo Province (Ehime Prefecture) from ancient times to the Middle Ages. They are said to be descendants of the ancient powerful Ochi clan. They rose to prominence in the mid-Heian period, and in the later period had great influence in the eastern and central regions. They were centered in Arai County (Niihama City, Saijo City), and advanced into Shufusufu County (Toyo City, Shuso County), Kuwamura County (Toyo City), Ochi County (Imabari City and its surrounding areas), Iyo County (Iyo City and its surrounding areas), and competed for power with the Kono clan, which arose from Kazahaya County (Hojo City). At the end of the Heian period, they developed strong ties with the Taira clan, and became their retainers.

古代から中世にかけての伊予国(愛媛県)の豪族。古代の豪族越智（おち）氏の流れをくむと伝えられる。平安時代の中期から台頭し，後期には東･中予地方に大きな勢力を有した。新居郡(新居浜市，西条市)を中心にして周敷（しゆふ∥すふ）郡(東予市，周桑郡)，桑村郡(東予市)，越智郡(今治市とその周辺)，伊予郡(伊予市とその周辺)等に進出し，風早郡(北条市)からおこった河野氏と勢力を競った。平安末期には平家との関係が深くなり，その家人化していた。
