Designated brand - Teimeigara

Stocks designated by stock exchanges as popular stocks that quickly respond to market trends, have high marketability, and are representative of their industry. In 1954 (Showa 29), it replaced the specific stocks system that was started with the aim of revitalizing the market. It was implemented from October 1978 to September 1991 (Heisei 3). It incorporated various measures to promote margin trading, such as trading units, settlement dates, and fees. Each stock exchange independently selected the designated stocks, but for example, the Tokyo Stock Exchange designated 12 stocks, including Heiwa Real Estate, Toray, Asahi Chemical Industry, Nippon Oil, Sumitomo Electric Industries, NEC, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Toyota Motor, Mitsui & Co., Tokio Marine & Fire Insurance, and Nippon Yusen, which were indicative of the market. It was abolished on October 1, 1991 in order to expand the favorable trading conditions that had been applied only to these special stocks to general stocks.

As mentioned above, although the term "designated stock" has been abolished, the term "designated stock on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange" still exists. It is important to note that this simply means "stocks designated for the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange" and is a different term from the "designated stock" in question.

証券市場の市場動向についてすばやい反応を示し、市場性が高く、かつ業種を代表するような人気の高い銘柄を証券取引所がとくに指定した株式。1954年（昭和29）、市場を活発化させることを目的にスタートした特定銘柄にかわって、1978年10月から1991年（平成3）9月まで実施された。売買単位、決済期日、手数料など信用取引促進の諸策が組み込まれていた。指定銘柄は各証券取引所が独自に選んだが、たとえば東京証券取引所の指定銘柄は、平和不動産、東レ、旭化成工業(あさひかせいこうぎょう)、日本石油、住友電気工業、日本電気、松下電器産業、三菱重工業(みつびしじゅうこうぎょう)、トヨタ自動車、三井物産、東京海上火災保険、日本郵船の12銘柄で、市場の指標的存在だった。こうした特別な銘柄に限って適用してきた有利な取引条件を一般銘柄に拡大するために、1991年10月1日に廃止された。

　以上のように「指定銘柄」は廃止されたものの、たとえば「東証一部指定銘柄」という用語は存在する。これは単に「東証一部市場に指定された銘柄」という意味であり、当該「指定銘柄」とは異なる用語であることには注意が必要である。
