A coalfield in the eastern United States, distributed from northeast to southwest along the Appalachian Mountains. It begins in Pennsylvania and Ohio in the north, passes through Kentucky, West Virginia, and Tennessee, and reaches northern Alabama at the southern end. It is one of the most important coalfields in the United States in terms of current and past coal production. The coal is bituminous, with anthracite or semi-anthracite in the eastern region, low-volatile to high-volatile in the central region, and high-volatile in the western region. Open-cut and underground mining are widely used for mining, and the mined coal is used for power generation, steelmaking, and other manufacturing industries. As of 1995, the coal reserves were estimated at about 80 billion tons underground and about 30 billion tons open-cut.
