A marine fish belonging to the family Scombridae in the order Perciformes of the class Osteichthyes. It is similar to the Spanish bonito, but is slightly thicker and shorter in spindle shape, and its scales are limited to the carapace that develops below the first dorsal fin and the lateral line that follows it. The back of the body is dark blue with many dark diagonal stripes, and there are several black spots reminiscent of moxa points on the side of the body below the pectoral fin, so it is often called "Yaito." Other dialects include Kyuten, Sumagatsuo, Sumagō, and Segatsuo. Total length is 1 meter. It is found in the Western Pacific Ocean south of central Honshu and the Indian Ocean, and is relatively coastal. There are two other known species in the Yaito genus, which live separately in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. It is said that about 60,000 tons of these three species are caught annually. This species is an important resource in small-scale fishing, such as pole and line fishing, but is primarily a secondary target for fishing for skipjack tuna and longline tuna. Its flesh is darker than that of skipjack tuna, and it is used fresh, smoked, dried, canned, and as shaved bonito.
