...Afterwards, at the request of Pope John XII, who was threatened by the southward advance of Berengar II, he again invaded Italy in 961, defeated Berengar, took control of northern Italy, and then advanced to Rome, where he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope (962, the establishment of the Holy Roman Empire). In 972, he arranged the marriage of his son Otto II to Byzantine princess Theophano, and had the Byzantine Empire recognize his imperial authority. He also took an active role in promoting literature, ushering in the Ottonian Renaissance. This is why he was called the Great Emperor by later generations.
