Ultima Thule

Japanese: ウルティマ・トゥーレ - うるてぃま・とぅーれ（英語表記）Ultima Thule

Nickname of the celestial body "2014 MU69" in the "Kuiper Belt," a region of small celestial bodies on the outer edge of the solar system. It means "the farthest land" in Latin. It was discovered in 2014 through observations by the Hubble Space Telescope. After NASA's unmanned probe "New Horizons" observed Pluto in 2015, it was given the nickname as its next target celestial body. A close observation by the probe in January 2019 revealed that Ultima Thule is about 32 kilometers long and 16 kilometers wide, and is shaped like a bowling pin.

太陽系外縁の小天体が集まる領域｢エッジワース・カイパーベルト｣にある天体｢2014 MU69｣の愛称。ラテン語で｢最果ての地｣の意。2014年、ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡の観測で発見された。NASA(米航空宇宙局)の無人探査機｢ニューホライズンズ｣が15年に冥王星を観測した後、次の目標天体として愛称が付けられた。19年1月に同探査機が行った接近観測により、ウルティマ・トゥーレは全長約32キロメートル、幅約16キロメートルほどの大きさで、ボウリングのピンのような形をしていることが明らかになった。
