Wang Mo

Japanese: 王墨 - おうぼく（英語表記）Wang Mo

A Chinese ink-wash painter from the Tang Dynasty. He was active in the early 9th century. Wang Mo in the Records of Famous Paintings of All Ages and Wang Xu in the Xuanhe Painting Collection are likely to be the same person as Wang Mo in the Records of Famous Paintings of the Tang Dynasty. He excelled in landscapes and pine and stone paintings, but his method of depiction, known as "blow ink," was bizarre. He would pour ink onto the paper and use the ink to paint the subject's hands, feet, hair, etc. in accordance with the shades of the ink. He was one of the founders of the so-called mid-Tang style of exquisite painting.

中国，唐の水墨画家。活躍期は9世紀初め。『歴代名画記』の王黙，『宣和画譜』の王洽 (おうこう) は『唐朝名画録』に載る王墨と同一人物であろう。山水，松石図を得意としたが，その「溌墨」と呼ばれる描写法は奇狂で，墨を紙に注ぎ，墨の濃淡に従い手足や頭髪などで描いたという。いわゆる中唐逸品画風の創始者の一人。
