Therapeutic techniques are basically derived from classical (respondent) conditioning, instrumental (operant) conditioning, and social learning methods, and include the following: (1) Systematic desensitization (also called counter-inhibition or counter-conditioning), which is effective for anxiety neurosis, social phobia, sexual neurosis, stuttering, writer's cramp, insomnia, and other conditions in which anxiety plays a major role in the continuation of problem behavior (Furthermore, the traumatic stimuli presented in the treatment setting can be either real situations or pictures or images).
