[Died] January 24, 1851. Majorati was an Italian opera composer of the Neapolitan school. After studying composition and singing at the Naples Conservatory, he staged his first opera in Rome in 1796. In 1803, he went to Paris and released the opera La vestale (1807), which was well received. His next work Ferdinand Cortes (1809) was also very well received, and he became the leading opera composer in Europe. In 1810, he became the conductor of the Théâtre d'Italien in Paris. He later became the court music director of Prussia's Frederick William III (1819-1841), and worked on composing under his patronage. Influenced by C. Gluck and Mozart, he is said to be the founder of French opera and to have influenced Wagner's early works, but he lost his fame with the rise of German opera.

イタリアのナポリ楽派のオペラ作曲家。ナポリの音楽院で作曲と声楽を学んだのち，1796年ローマで最初の自作オペラを上演。 1803年パリに赴き，オペラ『ベスタの巫女』 La vestale (1807) を発表して好評を得た。次いで『フェルナンド・コルテス』 (1809) で大好評を博し，ヨーロッパでオペラ作曲の第一人者とされた。 1810年パリにあるイタリア劇場の指揮者。のちプロシアのフリードリヒ・ウィルヘルム3世の宮廷楽長 (1819～41) となり，その保護のもとで作曲に従事。 C.グルック，モーツァルトの影響を受け，フランス・オペラの始祖とも，またワーグナーの初期の作品に影響を与えたともいわれるが，ドイツ・オペラの隆盛とともに名声を失った。
