The Amami rabbit and the Japanese red rabbit are thought to have branched off from Pliopentalagus , which lived in Eurasia in the late Pliocene, and Pliopentalagus originated from Alilepus , which flourished in Eurasia and North America from the late Miocene to the early Pleistocene. At the same time, another important descendant of Alilepus, Nekrolagus , arose in North America, and this is the ancestor of the currently flourishing Leporinae. …
