The Camisard Rebellion

The Camisard Rebellion
In the final years of the reign of Louis XIV (1702-04), during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-13), a Calvinist Protestant rebellion broke out in the Cévennes region of southern France. The name Camisards is said to come from the white shirts they wore, called camiso, or camisade, meaning night raid. The Cévennes region, where the rebellion took place, is a mountainous area in the southeast of the Massif Central. Small villages are scattered among the mountains, and it was a poor region where grain was cultivated in terraced fields, silkworm farming, and sheep farming were combined. However, Calvinist faith had spread there since the 16th century, and it was one of the major Protestant strongholds in southern France.
