Aleksandr Vasil'evich Sukhovo-Kobylin

Japanese: スホボ・コブイリン(英語表記)Aleksandr Vasil’evich Sukhovo‐Kobylin
Aleksandr Vasil'evich Sukhovo-Kobylin
1817‐1903
Russian playwright. Born into an old Moscow aristocratic family, he graduated from Moscow University's Department of Physics and Mathematics, and studied philosophy at the universities of Heidelberg and Berlin. He was later arrested and detained on suspicion of murdering his French mistress, and although the trial was suspended due to insufficient evidence, the mental anguish he endured was immeasurable, and the suspicions were never cleared. After the incident, while studying Hegelian philosophy, he wrote a trilogy of plays that are considered masterpieces in the tradition of Gogol. These are the comedy "Kretinsky's Wedding" (1854), in which a cunning aristocrat deceives a good landowner father and daughter; "The Incident" (1861), a cynical satire that depicts the corruption behind the court system and the tragedy of a foolish but proud landowner; and "The Death of Tarelkin" (1869), a grotesque farce that depicts the fate of a conman who tries to escape the hands of his superiors and debt collectors by faking his own death.
