Generally, it refers to agricultural laborers in Latin America, but in the narrow sense, it means an indebted peon who is in debt to the hacienda. The hacienda provided advances to the laborers and sold on credit to its own stores, and secured the labor force through the accumulation of these debts. In Mexico, the peons made up almost the entire labor force of the haciendas from independence until the eve of the Mexican Revolution. They became the main force during the Mexican Revolution. Peons are broadly divided into permanent peons who are given a small piece of land within the hacienda and are rented, and temporary peons.
