The chemical formula is (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 ・MgSO 4 ・6H 2 O. It is the common name for a double salt of ammonium sulfate and magnesium sulfate. It is obtained by evaporating a 1:1 molar mixture of the component salts in an aqueous solution. It was named after the British AEH Tutton, who conducted extensive research on this series of salts around 1900. Salts with the general formula M I 2 SO 4 ・M II SO 4 ・6H 2 O (M I = monovalent cation, M II = divalent cation) in which divalent cations such as zinc, cadmium, iron, cobalt, and nickel are substituted for magnesium, and monovalent cations such as potassium, rubidium, cesium, and thallium are substituted for ammonium are also collectively called Tutton salt.
