Belgian bibliographer and literary historian. He spent a huge amount of money and passion to collect, classify, and study the manuscripts and letters of French Romantic writers such as Balzac, Sand, and Gautier. His research focuses on bibliographies such as "History of the Works of Gautier" (1887) and "History of the Works of Balzac" (3rd edition, 1888), but also extends to biographies such as "The Truth of 'She and He'", which deals with the love affair between Sand and Musset. His vast collection of documents was bequeathed to the Academie de France and is kept at the Robingeur Library in Chantilly near Paris.

ベルギーの書誌学者，文学史家。莫大な費用をかけ，情熱を傾けて，バルザック，サンド，ゴーティエなど，フランス･ロマン主義時代の文学者について，その原稿，書簡などを収集，分類，研究した。彼の研究は，《ゴーティエ作品史》(1887)，《バルザック作品史》(第3版，1888)のような書誌を中心とし，サンドとミュッセの恋愛を扱った《“彼女と彼”の真相》のごとき伝記研究にも及んでいる。膨大な文献は，フランス学士院に遺贈され，パリ近郊のシャンティイにあるロバンジュール図書館の所蔵となっている。
