(Book of the Later Han, Biography of King Wu of Qi)② The total number of things of monetary value that belong to a person. A word that refers to movable property, real estate, rights, and obligations. Generally, it refers only to assets (positive assets), but it can also include liabilities (negative assets). ※Fukkoku Seikei (1873), translated by Ooi Kentaro, 3: "Wealth is all that can be owned privately by each individual."③ Figuratively, the skills and abilities that are the source of money. "Credit is a precious asset." [Glossary] (1) This word appears in Chinese classics, and its usage can be found in Japanese documents from the late Heian period to the Muromachi period. However, in the Edo period, the words "shindai" derived from "shintai" and "minoue " (the phonetic reading of "minoue") were used exclusively.
(2) In the Meiji period, the word "zain" began to be used again in translations of Western books, especially Western legal texts. It was included in the revised and expanded edition (1886) of Hepburn's "Wa-Ei-Rin-Shusei."

〘名〙① 財貨と資産。所有する土地、家屋、家具、金銭、貴金属など。身代(しんだい)。※本朝麗藻（1010か）下・贈心公古調詩〈具平親王〉「夜使_レ算_二財産_一。明也東西奔」※太平記（１４Ｃ後）一七「山門の衆徒財産(ザイサン)を尽くして」〔後漢書‐斉武王伝〕② ある人に属する金銭的価値あるものの総体。動産、不動産のほか、権利、義務のすべてをいう語。一般には資産（積極財産）だけをさすが、負債（消極財産）を含む場合もある。※仏国政典（1873）〈大井憲太郎訳〉三「財産とは凡て一人一己の私有と為し得可き諸物」③ 比喩的に、金銭を産みだす源となる技術や能力など。「信用は大切な財産である」[語誌](1)漢籍に見える語であり、日本でも平安後期から室町時代の文献に用例を確認できる。しかし、江戸時代には、「進退」から派生した「身代」や、「身の上(みのうえ)」を音読した「身上」が専ら用いられた。
(2)明治時代には、西洋の書物の翻訳、特に西洋の法律書の翻訳の中で再び「財産」が用いられるようになる。ヘボンの「和英語林集成」では改正増補版（明治一九年）から登載されるようになった。
