In the Kansai region and west, it is called "fuka" (shark), and in the San'in region, "wani" (crocodile). It is a cartilaginous fish belonging to the order Sharkiformes in the subclass Elasmobranchii. It is distinguished from rays by the fact that at least some of the 5-7 pairs of gill slits are located on the sides of the body, that the pectoral fins are not deformed and have a clear boundary between them and the sides of the body, and that it has a well-developed dorsal fin. It comes in a variety of sizes and shapes, from palm-sized ones to whale sharks that can reach a total length of 18 meters. Its habitats are diverse, including shallow waters, deep waters, and those that swim on the surface offshore. Many of them feed on fish, planktonic crustaceans, and squid. In Japan, its meat is used as an ingredient in kamaboko (fish cake) and hanpen (fish cake), and in China, its dried fins are widely used in cooking. → Related topic: Chimaer Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
