In the Kansai region and west, it is called "fuka" (shark), and in the San'in region, "wani" (crocodile). It is a cartilaginous fish belonging to the order Sharkiformes in the subclass Elasmobranchii. It is distinguished from rays by the fact that at least some of the 5-7 pairs of gill slits are located on the sides of the body, that the pectoral fins are not deformed and have a clear boundary between them and the sides of the body, and that it has a well-developed dorsal fin. It comes in a variety of sizes and shapes, from palm-sized ones to whale sharks that can reach a total length of 18 meters. Its habitats are diverse, including shallow waters, deep waters, and those that swim on the surface offshore. Many of them feed on fish, planktonic crustaceans, and squid. In Japan, its meat is used as an ingredient in kamaboko (fish cake) and hanpen (fish cake), and in China, its dried fins are widely used in cooking.

関西以西ではフカ，山陰ではワニとも。板鰓(ばんさい)亜綱のうちサメ目に属する軟骨魚類をいう。５〜７対の鰓孔のうち少なくとも一部は体の側方にあること，胸鰭が変形せず体側との間に明瞭な境界があること，よく発達した背鰭をもつことなどでエイ類と区別される。手のひらに収まるくらいのものから，全長18mに及ぶジンベイザメまで，大きさや形はさまざまである。浅海にすむもの，深海にすむもの，沖合の表層を遊泳するものなど生息場所も多様。魚類，浮遊性甲殻類，イカなどを食べるものが多い。日本では，肉がかまぼこやはんぺんなどの原料とされ，中国では鰭を干したものが料理に広く用いられる。
