1877‐1924 Dutch poet. Born in Amsterdam, he worked as a medical student, actor, and art dealer before devoting himself to poetry. After a long life abroad, he settled in Bergen (North Holland), where he died. At the end of the 19th century, he became a socialist poet along with Holter and Roland Holst, but unlike them, he considered socialism to be the basis of a new art form that could be understood by the masses. His simple, optimistic poems, such as Sun and Summer (1902) and Silence and Struggle (1909), which proclaimed lyricism and socialist ideals, made him popular with the masses, but his true nature was rather melancholic.
