Faith in the God of Fortune

Japanese: 福神信仰 - ふくじんしんこう

Belief in gods who bring good fortune and prosperity. The Seven Lucky Gods are well-known, but there are also others such as Inari Shrine and Tenman Daijizai Tenjin, and many are enshrined in small shrines within the grounds of temples or as subordinate shrines within the grounds of shrines. In addition, the yashikigami (house god) enshrined in the corner of a house and the aragami (wild god) enshrined near the hearth are also said to be related to the prosperity of the home, so they can also be included in the broad definition of lucky gods. Kappa (water sparrows) from old tales and legends, and spirit children from the water world, are also widely known to bring wealth to the home.

福徳，福分をもたらす神への信仰。福神の代表的なものに七福神があるが，このほかにも稲荷神社，天満大自在天神などがあり，寺院の境内の小祠や神社の境内末社としてまつられているものが多い。また，屋敷の隅にまつられる屋敷神やかまどの付近にまつられる荒神なども，家の繁栄との関係が説かれているので，広義の福神のなかに含めることができよう。昔話や伝説中の河童や，水の世界から来る霊童も，家に富をもたらす存在として広く知られている。
