A Greek geographer and astronomer born in Massilia (now Marseille) who lived around 300 BCE. His main work, Peri tou Ōkeanou (Oceanic Countries), has been lost, but he is known to have explored Britain via Cadiz, visited Scandinavian countries, and reached the mouth of the Wisla River in the Baltic Sea, and to have even mentioned Thule in the far north. Thule would be today's Iceland or Norway. He calculated the distance from the northern tip of Britain to Massilia with almost perfect accuracy, and discovered that the North Star is not aligned with the North Pole, and that the moon influences the tides.
